SUPPORT PRODUCTION OF A DOCUMENTARY FILM

"Keeping the Promise" is the motto of the U. S. Defense POW/Missing Personnel Office (DPMO) and the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command (JPAC). Some 78,000 Americans are still lost to WWII. Of those, 28,000 may be recoverable. They need to come home. The film will illuminate the work of DPMO and JPAC, nurture the support of recovery efforts among impacted countries, educate families of the missing as to their role in and resources for recovery, and inspire heirs of "the greatest generation" to retrieve, preserve, and share freedom's ideals and stories.

Four-time Emmy Award winner Bruce Norfleet will produce and direct the film. Norfleet was a semi-finalist in the 2002 Academy Awards for his short documentary The Price of Freedom.

PAEC, the Panhandle Area Education Consortium, is a partner in production, distribution, and for learning design and teacher training. PAEC is Florida's oldest regional educational consortium.

DISTRIBUTION 

PAEC operates the Florida Education Channel, a national broadcast television channel with capacity to reach over 20 million homes and every school in America.  The film will be distributed on channel 9418 Dish Network, on 118.5 on the West Coast and 61.5 on the East Coast, cable companies around the U.S., PBS stations in the U.S., and worldwide over the Internet.  DVD copies of the film will also be widely available for purchase

To accomplish its aims, THE DOCUMENTARY WILL:

• Chronicle the science of exhumation and DNA identification of remains, as well as the steps leading to hometown reburial of former POW 1st Lt. Ewart T. Sconiers, the only American officer from WWII as yet unrecovered after captivity in the German prison camp Stalag Luft III                                            
• Depict the heroic feats that earned Sconiers the Distinguished Service Cross and reveal his role as "security man" for then Lt. Col. Albert P. Clark, "Big S" for escape strategies made famous by the movie The Great Escape
• Divulge through a recent psychological autopsy the mysteries of Sconiers' untimely death and revisit his burial by Germans in an obscure grave
• Convey the astonishing journey of Sconiers' niece whom it seems destiny intends to finish his remarkable story, a journey that echoes imperatives to uncover more stories of WWII and learn from them
• Introduce an international community of volunteer researchers who, forged by passionate respect for freedom's ultimate price, work tirelessly to bring heroes home
• Demonstrate that ordinary people can shape global community, despite the divides of oceans, language, culture, and politics
• Disclose secrets that insist on being told and examine poignant human experiences of war that protry the universal tragedy it brings and that relevantly inform life today
• Salute the unsung heroes who embody America's promise to her fallen servicemen and women--of all conflicts--and foster a sense of individual obligation to preserve the memories, incidents, and human experiences of war
• Offer WII learning experiences and outcomes that align with K-12 performance expectations and design related teacher training activities
• Reflect the power of friendship represented by a lone Catalpa tree planted by a yet-unknown fellow airman after the war and that, having stood vigil for 66 years, ultimately may have marked Sconiers' exact burial spot
